Finding Serenity: Surviving Super Bowl with a few “Calm” Drinking Tips

Honestly, some of us don’t give a “flying football” who’s playing whom. Or when, why and how for that matter. Let’s face facts: for those of us who are “somewhat indifferent” about the whole thing, regardless, we’re in it in some form or another, whether that means our significant other is crazy excited or somehow the neighborhood is coming over because of that big screen in the back room. (More than likely the significant other let that slip.)

For those of us indifferent to the game, but quite ecstatic about imbibing a couple new concoctions, following are a few guidelines to get us through the day unscathed:

Stay the hell calm.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of serenity in the face of “the flying football.”

Plan your day.
We’ve seen it— the Super Bowl festivities can get wild—all those unidentifiable liquids in plastic cups. With a few simple ingredients and killer glassware, pure serenity can be ours.

Keep it healthy.
No need to go into the unhealthy endzone when we have a beverage plan. Remember, it’s a Sunday, the work week begins all over again on Monday.

Start early.
There will be shenanigans, silly jokes and general silly banter that we’ll regret ever hearing. To combat, begin the serenity early—keep it going throughout game day. Call it survival.

The Bloody Hail Mary

Brunch is the most important part of our weekend. Begin the festivities with a healthy dose of vegetables—in liquid form of course! We all have our favorite recipes don’t be shy. We’re partial to vegetable juice, copious amounts of celery salt, a splash each of lemon juice and Reyka Icelandic Vodka. Coat the glass rim with fresh lemon juice, dip in equal parts salt and fresh cracked pepper and get that game face on.

As the day progresses we will be plied with all forms of salty, fried and fatty foods. To offset and to add a bit of healthy sweetness, try this little lovey:

Fuzzy Blush Cuffs

3 ounces La Caudrina NV La Selvatica Moscato Bianco Asti DOCG, Piedmont
3 ounces pink grapefruit juice, not from concentrate (fresher the better!)

Add equal amounts Moscato and fresh pink grapefruit juice. The juice adds the right amount of acidity and bitterness to offset the sweet Moscato. Feeling crazy? Add a couple floating grapefruit slices! Drain the libation with a sweet tart reward in the glass! It’s like the worm at the bottom without the “ick” factor!

Not doing it? Tired of the 11th “possible” concussion from team whositwhatsis? Not a problem.

Tai Chi Jiva Chi

1 part Camus Extra Cognac
2 parts La Caudrina NV La Selvatica Moscato Bianco Asti

The Camus powers here with layers of cedar, tobacco and dried violets on the finish! And that burnished gold color heightened by the Moscato is pure shine. Yes, we’ll be the envy of those flying footballers for sure. But we don’t care, this is the serenity of all beverages. The pure Cognac brume coupled with the sparkle of Moscato cocoons us softly on this of all flying football days.
