The wine world is always boasting something new, undiscovered, hot! The funny thing is, some of those hottest discoveries aren’t really new, just waiting for the right time to burn brightly.

What’s really cool about Garnacha from Cariñena is its inherent adaptability to the varying degrees of terroir – which equates to levels of flavours that appeal to many palates. Make no mistake, the wines for this program are all value-driven wines–a precursor to what the Cariñena region offers.

Quick Geography Lesson

D.O.P. Cariñena is located in the heart of the Ebro Valley in Spain’s northeast region of Aragón, bordered by the Pyrenees and France to the north, and Catalunya to the east. The region’s prominent strategic situation as a gateway to the rest of Europe has long defined centuries of winemaking history, dating back to the Roman era. Planted at high altitude, the vineyards descend into dramatic windswept plains that benefit from extreme day-to-night temperature differences, ideal conditions for rich, expressive wines crafted from layers of rock, mineral, and earth.

Week 1: 7 April - Welcome to “The Next Great Grape” – the Cariñena Garnacha

The concept of a cooperative and how this works for the Cariñena region. The Cariñena region has more old vines of Garnacha planted than any other region in Spain, with over 1600 growers. The region offers some of the best quality over price of flavorful, fruit-forward wines made of Garnacha grapes from established vines planted in distinctive stone soils. This notion that wine is perhaps “better” when made from an estate vineyard or a regional single vineyard will be discussed.

We’re thrilled and delighted to be joined by Lyn Farmer, James Beard Award-winning wine and food writer, WSET Instructor, arts educator and public speaker. Lyn experienced the Cariñena region last June so he’ll share his insight into the history, sights, sounds and tastes that is Cariñena. Lyn says of the area:

“I believe Cariñena is positioned to take a vibrant place on the world wine stage. It is not (yet) so well known as regions slightly to the north like Ribera del Duero and Rioja, nor is it (yet) so trendy as Priorat and Toro, but Cariñena’s day is coming.”  @FizzFan

A leading winery since 1944, Bodegas San Valero (Grupo BSV) has the longest history in Cariñena, and has benefitted from access to some of the most prominent vineyards in the region for over 70 years. Grupo BSV is considered one of the most progressive wineries in Cariñena, combining a passion and respect for tradition with the most modern winemaking techniques that Europe has to offer.

Week 4: 28 April – Bodegas Paniza: Microclimates and Soils

Founded in 1953, Bodegas Paniza is named for the village where the winery is located, and where growers have cared for their vineyards for generations. The winery is situated in the highest elevation area of D.O.P. Cariñena to the south, at the rise of the Sistema Ibérico Mountain range, which brings cooling influences even in the peak of summer. Paniza benefits from a wide variety of microclimates spanning limestone, sand and clay stone soils which allow the team to choose between a variety of vineyards to find the balance they need.

Bodegas Paniza, 2012 Viñas Viejas de Paniza Garnacha SRP: $18

Bodegas Paniza, 2008 Paniza Artigazo SRP: $27
